Man wanted for string of Newport News burglaries

    A man is wanted for a string of burglaries in Newport News.

     Police say 34-year-old James Stephen Young is wanted for burglary, grand larceny, obtaining money by false pretenses and possession of stolen property with intent to resell.

Crime Line tip leads to second 'cold case' homicide arrest

NEWPORT NEWS — A citizen's phone tip early this morning led Newport News police to the suspect in a "cold case" homicide from 2003. It is the second "cold case" homicide arrest in as many days for Newport News police.

Arthur Lee Sanford, 57, was taken into custody at a residence in the 1400 block of 25th Street, not long after the 5:40 a.m.

Teens charged in vandalism spree speak from jail

NEWPORT NEWS — Two teenagers charged in connection with spray-painting more than 40 vehicles Monday morning said they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Shawn C. Hill said he and a friend were on their way back from Yorktown Beach when his car ran out of gas. He said he walked from his friends' house to meet up with someone to get some gasoline, a trip of about 25 miles. On his way, he ran into another friend who had a spray can and gave it to him. Hill said he spray painted a fence and the street, but said he did not spray paint any cars that morning.

"I don't know where my mind was," Hill said during an interview at Newport News Jail Annex Wednesday.

Adult Charged With Vandalism

Newport News Police have charged another adult in connection with cars that were spray painted in the city yesterday. 18 year-old Jhonny Sierra faces several charges. Police say the vandalism happened sometime early yesterday morning. They tell NewsChannel 3 they expect to file charges against more teens tomorrow.

Police identify teen charged in vandalism spree

NEWPORT NEWS — Police have identified the 18-year-old Newport News man charged with vandalism after more than 40 vehicles were spray-painted between Menchville and Colony roads on Sunday night.

Shawn Cory Hill is charged with five counts apiece of felony destruction of property and conspiracy to commit a felony, as well as 34 counts of of misdemeanor destruction of property. He was placed in the custody of the Newport News City Jail.

Several other suspects, male and female juveniles between the ages of 15 and 17, have been interviewed by police. Further charges are pending.

Man sentenced to 21 years for sexually abusing a child

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Darrell Walter Holmes, 38, of Chicago, Ill., was sentenced today to 21 years in prison for aggravated sexual abuse of a child under the age of 12. 

Neil H. MacBride, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, made the announcement after sentencing by United States District Judge Mark S. Davis.  Holmes was found guilty on March 26, 2010, following a four-day jury trial.

According to evidence presented at trial, Holmes was stationed in Japan with the Air Force when he made a child, between the ages of six and seven, sodomize him on two occasions. 

This case was investigated by the FBI.  Assistant United States Attorney Lisa R. McKeel is prosecuting the case on behalf of the United States.

Suspect leads police on chase through Newport News, Hampton

NEWPORT NEWS – - Newport News police are questioning a suspect that led officers on a vehicle pursuit that started in Newport News and ended in Hampton Saturday night.

Newport News police are questioning a suspect that led officers on a vehicle pursuit that started in Newport News and ended in Hampton Saturday night, said Newport News police dispatchers.

The chase, which started around 7:35 p.m. near the intersection of Bellwood Road and Jefferson Avenue in Newport News, ended on Fairmont Drive in Hampton about 10 minutes later. There were no injuries in the chase and no charges have been filed, dispatchers said.
