NEWPORT NEWS Va. (WTKR) - An accident on I-64 claimed the lives of a grandmother and granddaughter in Newport News. Pennie Leveeren was driving with granddaughter Shekinah Parker on the interstate on Tuesday when a vehicle slammed into the back of their vehicle. Leveeren died on the scene. Parker was rushed to hospital in critical condition and died around 6 p.m. later that evening.
Leveeren’s daughter and Parker’s mother, Maria Riddick, is the youth director at the historic First Baptist Church in Jefferson Park, Newport News. “They were driving and they approached a disabled vehicle." Said pastor, Rev. Dr. Reginald C. Woodhouse. “The grandmother slowed down in order to merge into the next lane. While merging, a car hit her car in the rear. I was told that once the car hit her, her car started to spin. Then another car hit her from the side.” Woodhouse explained.
Parker was a recent graduate from Woodside High School in Newport News. She was preparing to attend Virginia Commonwealth University on a full academic scholarship.
At present, no funeral arrangements have been made.
