Dr. Fish Foot Therapy

Dr. Fish Foot Therapy

HAMPTON – Something is a little fishy in the pedicure bowl!  Dr. Fish Therapy is a service that is offered at select number of foot spas.  The closest spa to carry this service is All About the Sole located on Big Bethel Road in the Hampton Woods Plaza.

The fish originally come from Turkey and are called Garra Rufa and Chin and Chin.  They are completely toothless but nibble and suck away the dead skin from feet.

The fish only consume the affected and dead areas of the skin, leaving the healthy skin to grow.  Particular enzymes in their mouths allow the lifeless skin to break away.  This allows for an easier exfoliation process.

Fish therapy has been around as early as the 14th century.  The Turks took advantage of the hot springs to help themselves relieve fatigue and cure diseases.

Local stylist, still working in her 90s, earns historical marker

NEWPORT NEWS — Madam Annie B. Daniels curls her client's hair, transforming a hairdo one curl at a time. The smoke emanating from the hot curler twists toward the ceiling.

"I can use that electric thing (automatic curler), but in my way of thinking, it doesn't do as good of work," said Daniels, wearing a purple and green patterned dress.

Daniels, in her 90s, still goes to work every day at the beauty school she owns, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., sometimes staying later.

Every morning before work, she said she prays while walking around the Madam Daniels School of Beauty and Culture on Chestnut Avenue. Then she'll step inside, get down on her knees to pray once more, and start her work day.

Daniels won't reveal her age, but she said she feels fine.

"I don't like to talk about it," Daniels said of her age. "It's not important. I feel good.
